Position: Programme Assistant – Labour Rights / Business & Human Rights
Reports To: Program Advisor – Labour Rights

Location: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel.
Contract Period: Two year renewable contract based on performance and fundingPurpose of the Job: To effectively implement the Results Based Social Certification Systems (RBSC) project in select horticulture companies in Kenya and to support in advancing the business and human rights discourse through ongoing projects at KHRC.
What Are RBSC Systems?: Result based social certification systems are tools by which the project aims to enhance corporate accountability through existing certification schemes in the horticulture sector.
Through the RBSC systems, the project seeks to infuse social indicators to and promote the delivery of actual results to workers and host communities by certification schemes.
Broadly, the RBSC project envisages a future where certification moves from mere auditing techniques to results based monitoring mechanisms.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Conceptualizing implementation of project interventions and preparing periodic / progress reports including donor reports
- Leading in the implementation of the RBSC project
- Supporting the Programme Advisor in managing the RBSC project sub-grantee in line with the MoU between the KHRC and the sub-grantee and in accordance with the deliverables and provisions of the RBSC grant
- Generating briefs on project activities for internal sharing
- Designing relevant campaign and advocacy strategies for the RBSC project
- Supporting the Economic and Social Justice Team in the implementation of business and human rights projects in general as well as creating synergies with other organizational initiatives
- Participating in donor meetings to review implementation progress of the RBSC project
- Participating in Project Management Team Meetings (PMT) to review project implementation progress
- Developing budgets and monitoring program expenditure
- Networking with relevant partner organisations
- Mentoring interns and supervising consultants working on the RBSC project, Labour Rights work and Business and Human Rights projects.
- Leading and/or participating in the requisite committees and meetings with KHRC
- Mainstreaming of historically marginalized groups into all interventions
- Be a member of at least one KHRC internal committee
- Any other tasks as assigned, from time to time, by the supervisor
Important Job RelationshipsInternal and external relationships include; departmental heads, team leaders and peers; donors, government officers and regulatory bodies, consultants, horticulture companies, civil society organisations and the community.
- University degree preferably in social sciences.
Knowledge and Experience
- At least 2 years’ experience in either labour rights work or business and human rights.
- Engagement with horticulture companies in Kenya will be an added advantage.
- Experience in proposal and report writing.
- Demonstrable understanding of research and analytical skills.
- Demonstrable understanding of the labour rights legal framework in Kenya and the business and human rights discourse.
- Capacity to develop and sustain functional networks.
- Demonstrable experience in programmes and programmes/projects management.
- Technologically proficient in MS Office and analytical packages.
- Passionate and committed to respect for human rights, diversity, integrity and transparency
- Ability to handle multi-tasks and respond to incidentals with effectiveness
- Ability to manage conflicts
